Local AI for Small Business

Choose cloud, local, or hybrid AI without buying the wrong solution first.

A local model can keep some work running when an online service is unavailable. It can also create new costs, security duties, and recovery problems. This guide helps you compare cloud services, local systems, hybrid designs, conventional automation, and no deployment—using one real workflow and evidence from the route you might actually use.

The right answer may be a business AI subscription, a no-purchase local experiment, a managed system, a hybrid route, ordinary automation—or “not yet.”

Section one

Start with five questions

Five questions before models, servers, or subscriptions

The useful decision is not “cloud or local?” in isolation. It is whether one bounded job can create enough value under an approved data path, with a qualified reviewer, a named operator, a safe fallback, and evidence strong enough to justify the cost.

  1. 1

    What is the job?

Define one trigger, owner, approved input, output, reviewer, and deadline.

  2. 2

May the business use the data this way?

Identify rights, restrictions, routes, retention, and consequences before testing with real information.

  3. 3

Can a qualified person catch a bad result?

Human review must be specific, capable, and included in time and cost.

  4. 4

    Who operates and recovers it?

Name who owns accounts, updates, monitoring, backup, restore, support, and shutdown.

  5. 5

    What result would justify continuing?

Compare with today's process and a plausible conventional alternative using pre-set measures and stop conditions.

An unresolved answer is “not tested,” not a conditional pass.

Define one workload in about five minutes

The AI Workload Readiness Card helps you document today's process, identify the data and consequences, and select the next safe test. It does not select a model or certify security, privacy, compliance, or business value.

  • Not ready
  • Test an approved business service
  • Run a no-purchase local experiment

Section two · The guide

A practical guide—not a self-hosting sales pitch

Local AI for Small Business explains how generative AI works at the level a buyer needs, distinguishes commercial access from open weights and open-source software, sizes compute without relying on model labels alone, compares six deployment patterns, and shows who must operate each layer. Three reference systems and a staged thirty-day pilot turn the concepts into decisions a small organization can test.

Included topics

  • What recent assistant outages reveal about dependency and fallback
  • How prompts, retrieved documents, tools, logs, and backups form the complete data path
  • Commercial, open-weight, and open-source distinctions
  • Cloud, hosted API, managed private, desktop, shared-server, and hybrid patterns
  • Memory, context, concurrency, storage, power, support, and recovery requirements
  • Software options and the operating responsibilities behind them
  • Privacy, permissions, prompt injection, deletion, incident response, and continuity
  • A thirty-day evidence plan that can end in deploy, adapt, redirect, defer, or stop

Locality is a ladder, not a switch

Each rung describes more of the job staying local. None of them, by itself, is a privacy, security, or compliance conclusion.

  1. Rung 1

    Local inference only

The model runs locally; sign-in, search, storage, telemetry, or updates may not.

  2. Rung 2

    Local model and documents

Inference, source files, and index remain local; identity, interfaces, and integrations may not.

  3. Rung 3

    Local application path

The intended application path stays local, subject to verification of external calls and dependencies.

  4. Rung 4

    Tested offline workflow

Everything the bounded job needs during the named outage has been tested, with a documented fallback.

Caution. “Runs locally” does not by itself prove privacy, security, compliance, or outage resilience.

Need a decision for one real workflow?

The fixed-scope AI Fit Assessment applies the same route-neutral method to one bounded business job. Almiga Tech documents the current process, sketches the data path and operating responsibility, compares plausible conventional, cloud, local, and hybrid routes, identifies the missing evidence, and provides a short written recommendation.

The recommendation may be to proceed, narrow the scope, choose another route, defer, or stop.

Implementation, penetration testing, legal or compliance conclusions, and hardware guarantees are excluded unless separately scoped with appropriately qualified help.

Fixed price: $495, with the assessment scope confirmed in writing before work begins.

  • One bounded-workflow interview
  • Current-process baseline and conventional alternative
  • Data-path and operating-responsibility sketch
  • Initial route comparison and evidence gaps
  • A written next-step recommendation

Current facts should show their age

Models, software, licenses, prices, compatibility, and service terms change. Volatile pages will show a visible “last verified” date, distinguish vendor specifications from hands-on results and editorial inference, link to primary sources, and retain a public correction history. Essential corrections and safety updates will remain available without an email subscription.
